The influence of American alternative rock pioneer Frank Zappa (1940-1993) on music history is undeniable. In 1995, a monument to Zappa was erected in Vilnius, Lithuania, and a replica of the monument was taken to Baltimore, his hometown in the USA. The Lithuanian Symphony Wind Orchestra, however, has decided to take a non-monumental approach to Zappa's legacy. After all, Zappa was also greatly influenced by avant-garde art and jazz, and so the idea of a programme combining Zappa's original compositions, arranged for symphonic wind orchestra, and jazz and avant-garde opuses was a natural one. The programme is conducted by Karolis Variakojis, one of the most promising interpreters of contemporary music in Lithuania and the orchestra's chief conductor
